Scientists have performed their first transplant of a genetically modified pig heart into a human. According to the NY Times, the 8-hour operation was a success and the patient had a normal pulse and heartbeat. Genetic modification reduces the risk of tissue rejection which can happen even with a great match. Apparently, the patient had no rejection after 48 hours which is a great sign.
