Earlier this year, my son-in-law, Jared, completed his first Ironman competition in Houston, Tx. The race began early in the morning with people ranging from their 20s to their 80s. For us, it was the longest day as he completed the event by 8:30 at night after beginning at 7 am. None of the older women in their 80s completed the event, which consisted of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon. For some, the ultimate goal is to compete in the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Recently, an 80-year-old grandmother, Natalie Grabow, became the first Octogenarian female to complete the event. She was the only one in her 80-84 category and completed the event in under the maximum time of 17 hours, and she lives in Mountain Lakes, NJ. Congratulations, Natalie, you make us proud. The oldest male to complete the event was 85 years old a few years ago. Read more below from NPR 80-year-old grandmother becomes oldest woman to finish the Ironman World Championship
