Can you tell if you are drinking enough during the day? While there are formulas to determine whether you drink enough during the day such as the idea that we need 8 glasses of water daily, some of what we drink actually causes us to need even more water such as caffeinated drinks which cause us to lose water faster.

There are many causes of dehydration which may include

  • Coffee and other caffeinated drinks
  • Blood pressure medications that are diuretics
  • Hot weather
  • Exercise
  • Medical conditions such as fever, sepsis, and kidney disease may also cause increased fluid loss
  • A loss of salt which can cause you to have diarrhea and nausea.
  • alcoholic beverages

According to the Mayo clinic, they recommend the following

1.Adult women should take in about 11.5 cups or 2.7 liters of fluids per day.

2.men should get 15.5 cups or 3.7 liters per day.

It is important to note that many of the fluids we take in including soups, vegetables, and fruits count towards these amounts.

  1. Dry mouth or feeling of thirst
  2. Increased appetite
  3. Dark and decreased urine production
  4. Headaches and dizziness
  5. Fatigue and dark circles under your eyes
  6. Constipation

Sometimes while on vacation in another country, you will eat foods that you are not accustomed to and develop diarrhea and nausea. My go to is usually Gatorade or Pedialyte which has more salt and can be more effective. There are other drinks that have salt and will shut this down as your body is now able to keep water in your system. You can tell which one is working by how quickly it reverses the symptoms.

These same drinks can help you recover from dehydration as well. You can also drink salt water which can help. Years ago, they would offer us salt tablets which had a similar effect.
