In the USA, many Americans have Diabetes type 2 which is due to insulin resistance. Metabolic syndrome is what develops with prolonged sugar exposure that is in excess of what we actually require. Often these problems began with our old food pyramid, soda’s and children with sugary juice boxes. Solving or managing the problem requires more than just Metformin, a common drug used to help with insulin resistance. If not properly managed, the condition can devolve to insulin dependent diabetes which requires regular insulin monitoring and injections. My son was type 2 from poor eating habits and being overweight. We found out about the diabetes when he was in school and lost a lot of weight by the end of the semester. His endocrinologist helped him manage the condition with diet and exercise such as weight lifting. We now have other tools available to us such as GLP-1 medications which help reduce the desire for carbs and even eating which helps patients lose weight as well. If managed properly, these medications may eventually be part of a program that helps diabetics reverse the condition altogether. My son eventually had bariatric surgery which miraculously resolved his diabetes but he figured out how to overeat anyway and he has gained much of the weight back. Eating and living a healthier food and exercise lifestyle requires you change bad habits. Glp-1 meds can help reduce the hormonal urge to overeat. The right foods can change the gut flora to help you maintain weight and avoid inflammation caused by the wrong intestinal flora. The NY times recently posted an article discussing why movement is important for diabetes management. It is also important to beating the condition altogether. Check out the article below.
