For years, the food pyramid has been shaped by government policies that have been influenced by food industry lobbyists, our oversupply of corn, and too much sugar. Because of ideas such as natural fats being bad, but replacing them with sugar is ok, more of us are overweight, and the number of people with diabetes has exploded. It is not normal, and it is driving healthcare costs in our country. Food is medicine. Over time, more information has been revealed that sugary anything, shutting our children up with snacks they do not need, and poor food choices are making us ill. Are we to believe that we are going to be saved by a pill? Unless you are living under a rock, RFK Jr. is rocking the health industry with new ideas, healthy eating suggestions, and a new food pyramid being promoted with a flashy new website. Will it work? On top are vegetables, healthy fats, and fruits. At the bottom are whole grains. Where things get contentious is the emphasis on animal fats and protein. Meats, full-fat dairy, butter, and beef tallow – all sources of saturated fat – are now recommended as healthy fats according to the website, The Conversation. Many of the recommendations echo the 2020–25 guidelines that came before. Are the experts wrong? If they were so right, why are we as Americans so ill? The conversation makes a case for questioning most of these ideas, as we do consume enough protein, yet as we age, we need more, and while we are young, carbs are better for us and better tolerated in our bodies, according to current science.
