A Migraine headache can be debilitating.  If you suffer from migraines, you probably recognize the oncoming symptoms which may be anything from floaters, other visual disturbances such as an aura or even tinnitus.  The initial signs, known as a prodrome can differ from person to person. The migraine itself can induce nausea and many sufferers feel incapacitated by the headache which is brought about by a vasoconstriction and then a vasodilation in the brain.

The trigger for a migraine can also differ as well.  Some people experience migraines when exposed to certain foods, while others can trigger it by clenching their teeth at night. Certain medications will also induce a migraine.

One of the most common triggers is the musculoskeletal system.   Perhaps, this is why so many migraine sufferers skip the medications and visit a chiropractor and are helped, when traditional medical management fails.

Medically, most physicians never consider that migraines for most of the people who suffer from them may be caused by poor body mechanics and how that affects the persons neck mechanics. Even the Mayo Clinic’s web site ignores it.

Asymmetry in the musculoskeletal system will cause the muscles on one side of the neck and skull to experience tension, which is a common trigger for tension headaches, migraines and even vertigo.  The medications that are available may reduce the impact of a migraine because they act on the vascular structures in the brain that cause them.   This is not the same things as working on the cause though.

Understanding your individual triggers for a migraine can be quite helpful in preventing them from happening altogether.

There are natural ways of mitigating an oncoming migraine such as pressure points or acupressure points.   Certain acupressure points are known to help reduce the symptoms of a migraine.
