Turmeric is a spice found in many foods eaten in India, Thailand, and many other countries.   The active ingredient called Curcumin is often recommended by our office for its high-level anti-inflammatory properties. The product we carry is called theracumin made by Integrative Therapeutics. Unlike many pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories, the only side effect of Turmeric is that it also acts as a blood thinner which can also offer benefits such as a reduced risk of stroke as well as reduced inflammatory pain. Used for thousands of years, Turmeric has been used in food and it has also been thought of as an agent to calm the stomach.  Recently, the NY Times reported on a study to confirm it turmeric is helpful with stomach upset. A new study concluded that it could be effective at alleviating stomach discomfort. But a lot is unknown. And in recent decades, it’s become popular as a dietary supplement, often sold as curcumin — a chemical compound found in dried turmeric — with claims that it can soothe joint pain, reduce inflammation and improve mobility. In Thailand, turmeric is also often consumed in its spice or supplement form to quell gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating and indigestion, said Dr. Krit Pongpirul, an associate professor of preventive and social medicine at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.
