Microplastics are everywhere in the news. By definition, they are pieces of plastic less than 5mm in size. They come from larger plastics that degrade over time, getting into our systems as well as the systems of many of the animals we consume putting them in our food supply.

Micro- and nano plastics which are even smaller partials end up in our air, soil, water and food. There is research that suggests these materials are even in the vegetables we eat too.

While our bodies naturally eliminate many of these substances, others may migrate in our blood and end up in the organs in our bodies.

Scientists are finding these products may interfere with reproduction and they may also affect our immune systems which can be weakened by them, affect our hormones and even increase the risk of certain cancers.

1.Avoiding Microplastics can be as simple as avoiding plastic water bottles, plastic food containers or at least not cooking in them and transferring the cold food to glass dishes or microwave safe dishes.

2.In the home, vacuuming carpets and using air purifiers can reduce our air exposure to these substances.

3.Washing manmade clothes prior to wearing them may reduce exposure as well.
