High costs for some covid-19 tests are just because they can.

High costs for some covid-19 tests are just because they can. The NY Times recently reported on a lab that had charged $380 for a covid test.  Your local CVS probably charges $20. The company which is a start-up named GS labs regularly charges $380 because they legally can. Welcome to healthcare capitalism American style. If this is not a strong argument for the government to play a role in healthcare prices, I am not sure there ever will be. Apparently,  GS labs who is headquartered in Nebraska is giving insurers and the public the business literally. Congress probably never Read More »

Ivermectin; updated information shows this is not an effective treatment to prevent severe covid-19 illness.

Ivermectin; updated information shows this is not an effective treatment to prevent severe covid-19 illness. Ivermectin is inexpensive and now in short supply, as doctors prescribe this drug used for heartworm in animals or acne rosacea in humans for off-label prophylactic covid-19 use.  Some governments suggest they may not be able to get enough Ivermectin. Are people taking this as an unproven alternative to vaccination? Vaccination which is accepted and recommended internationally and Ivermectin are mutually exclusive in their intent and risk level.  True, vaccines have reduced the severity of disease but are not foolproof and they have a small Read More »

A new study suggests those who recovered from covid-19 infection have much higher immunity to the delta variant than vaccinated people.

A new study suggests those who recovered from covid-19 infection have much higher immunity to the delta variant than vaccinated people. I have been wondering why there has been very little discussion regarding those who had recovered from covid-19 infections. There is data showing that those who were vaccinated were more resistant to severe infection, but what about those who did covid-19 the hard way; by becoming infected. In my case, I was infected last December and recovered.  I found out weeks later I had a strong antibody response and then received the Pfizer vaccine at the beginning of May. Read More »

Is a covid-19 booster needed to maintain immunity for the immunocompromised or for the general public?

Is a covid-19 booster needed to maintain immunity for the immunocompromised or for the general public? The debate over covid-19 boosters has resulted in the US and Israel offering boosters based on the idea of waning immunity. Scientists are not buying the latest gambit from big pharma to increase their sales by having wealthy countries offer a third injection while many poorer countries have yet to offer their citizens the first dose. The WHO has voiced their concerns as covid-19 is an international problem. The idea of a booster was strengthened recently when an Israeli study showed that after 146 Read More »

Is vaccine refusal enabling the delta variant? Check this article out.

Is vaccine refusal enabling the delta variant? Check this article out. My daughter in Chicago who works at the VA just told me that due to the rise of the delta variant, all federal hospitals such as the V.A. are now requiring vaccination for all their employees. This trend is also taking place in many hospital systems and in some workplaces. The case for mass vaccination  In NJ, close to 60% of the populace has been vaccinated against covid-19 and our numbers are rising as well.  Nationally, about 50% have been vaccinated. The governor of NJ has not reinstituted a Read More »
